ATX-101(Kybella) ®/ Kythera is a deoxycholic acid injection produced by Allergan, which is used to treat chin fat accumulation. It will lead to lipolysis when injected subcutaneously, and was approved for marketing by the US FDA in 2015.
The more common side effects (AES) of deoxycholic acid Kybella injection include pain, swelling, bruising, numbness, erythema and induration. These events are usually moderate and temporary.

A 45 year old female patient received double chin injection of deoxycholic acid Kybella in an external plastic surgery clinic. Central anterior neck wound appeared after the second injection. After the injection, the patient immediately experienced severe pain and discomfort. A few days after the injection, the patient reported that the injection site was red, swollen and induration increased, and then the wound and dandruff appeared. The physical examination showed that there were purplish red nodules 2 cm deep in the front neck, scabs in the middle, and moderate induration around (see the following figure).
Wounds were treated with hydrosol dressing. Three weeks later, the dandruff softened and fell off, exposing a thick pink scar (see the following figure). After two months of topical steroids, triamcinolone acetonide 0 injected 0.2 mL (20 mg/mL) of hypertrophic scar, and then treated with pulsed dye laser, Meigeguoming X improved. She continued to be followed up for treatment of hypertrophic scars.
A 30-year-old woman complained of too much fat on her chin. After discussing the treatment plan with the doctor, it was decided to use deoxycholic acid Kybella in the doctor's list for treatment. Possible mechanism
In pre marketing clinical trials, most of the adverse reactions of deoxycholic acid Kybella were limited to the injection site, mild to moderate and temporary. The common side effects are pain, swelling, bruising, numbness, erythema and induration. These adverse reactions are usually related to injection procedures and can be resolved in different treatment rooms. Serious adverse reactions are relatively rare.
